Glaucoma is an eye disease resulting in damage to the optic nerve that eventually results in the loss of vision. Early detection is vital for glaucoma treatment and to stop the disease from progressing. If glaucoma is not caught early and treated it can cause blindness. The optic nerve is responsible for carrying images from the eye to the brain. In the early stages of glaucoma, there may be no symptoms. Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma, however, medication or surgery can prevent further loss of vision.

The most common form of glaucoma is open-angle. Open-angle glaucoma develops slowly over time and it occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged. The inner eye pressure rises because the correct amount of fluid cannot drain out of the eye. Damage to the optic nerve is painless and a large portion of your vision can be lost before you are aware of the problem. In many cases, open-angle glaucoma is treated with glaucoma medication, laser, or iStent surgery. In more severe situations, additional major eye surgery is necessary.

Angle-closure glaucoma is a dangerous form of the disease which can cause pain and blindness quickly. Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the iris moves forward to block the drainage angle shaped by the cornea and the iris.  A sudden spike in intraocular pressure results and produces symptoms such as eye pain, redness, and nausea. This is a medical emergency. If the eye pressure is not reduced it can cause permanent vision loss.
